Art Farm Preparing for Fall Line-Up of Classes

Art Farm's summer camp season 2010 came to a nice closing Aug. 15 with a great group of students. Thanks again to my wonderful staff: painting instructor Kris Finch; natural sciences instructor Jennifer Stowe; camp aides Emerson Coman, Max Giffen; AnneMarie Delfino; Erica Barrett, and Rachel Mehrberg. Thanks also to the San Diego Humane Society for bringing an array of animal ambassadors to share with students.

I enjoyed teaching introduction to charcoal teaching. At right is a fine drawing by Rose Wilkinson, age 11.

Students this summer really enjoyed our new nature trail with Jennifer, where they learned about our natural woodland habitat and the creek that supports our local wildlife and native plants. Students kept nature journals, where they took notes about adaption and habitat, took samples of creek water to observe under a microscope, and helped with the raising of tree frogs found as polliwogs in the creek (and released the last day of camp as fully formed young frogs).

All students this summer enjoyed hanging out with Picasso, our mini-mule; Harry Potter and Mr. Weasley, our alpacas; Kandinsky, our rescue goat; and Chelsea, our young German Shepherd. Students especially loved spending time with our free range chickens, a variety of Polish and Brahmans. I doubt there is another summer camp around where you learn charcoal drawing and acrylic painting technique while holding a chicken.

And finally, thank you to all the wonderful Art Farm parents who keep coming back and who tell other families about our unique art, nature, and natural sciences program. It is mostly through your word-of-mouth that makes what we do here possible.

Art Farm is now preparing classes for the coming fall (to be announced). In the meantime, we continue with our Saturday morning art class for elementary and middle school students (10:30 AM to Noon). If you are a scouting group, a school, or a parent looking for a great birthday party venue, please note that groups start signing up early for limited time slots. If you would like more information about outings, email the director at: director@CarlsbadArtFarm.com.
